We had a full day of tutoring with different kids every forty-five min!
At lunch all the volunteers went to ear at the dining hall with the kids. The kids sit in circles and eat with their hands. In India they don't do things with their left hands. And those of you who are reading this know that I'm left handed. The kids laughed as I tried scooping the food into my mouth. It's not as easy as it looks. They taught me how to position my arm and how to use my thumb to push the food into my mouth. I really enjoy times like this with the kids. I love getting to know their personalities as I spend time with them and they get to know me.
After school the volunteers meet back up, rest and then it's play time with the kids. During play time some of the kids are in a program they try out for called Life Dance directed by Shaun Perry! When Shaun learned that Chenelle, Krissy and I dance for the Jazz he asked Us to come join the class. It's been so much fun dancing everyday with some of the kids during playtime. Shaun teaches more than just dance during this time. He teaches how to love yourself, love God, to be disciplined and still be joyful and have fun in life. I love watching him teach. The feelings I feel when I dance with these kids in his class is overwhelming. I leave the class feeling happy and fulfilled. What an amazing program for these kids!
After we anytime we prepare for dinner which is held on the rooftop of the Elephant house! We always have a veggie bowl mixed with cucumbers, tomatoes, and green peppers. We have a fruit bowl with a mix of pineapples, mangos, pomegranate, apples and bananas. Then we have red rice with some kind of Indian topping. Sometimes it's really spicy other times it's manageable. I love the food and I feel that it's healthy, but I will say it's only been a few days but I'm craving Mexican! Oh and Ice cream. Anything cold really. During dinner we all go around telling our highs and lows of the day. Sometimes it's really emotional sometimes it's funny. It usually depends on where the person was in the rotation (leprosy colony, education, construction). I love this part because then I get to hear what the others did that day.
After dinner we wash the dishes and go to our assigned families. Oh how I love this time. I am in a family of about twenty boys. Ranging from the ages of 5 to 15. I love spending quality time with these boys. Some remind me of my nephews back home whom I miss so much. We always read books and play games. They love to play with my jewelry. After we help the house mother Kala get the boys to bed we say goodnight and head back home to the elephant house. I enjoy this time also. I get to hang out with my roommates, blog and send emails.
I'm still new at blogging and I'm hoping I'll get better everyday. I hope those who read this are getting something out of my blog and are touched by the things that have certainly touched my heart. I'm loving my time in India. I do miss my loved ones at home. Thank you for all loving and supporting me!
