Today we went to a small Leprosy colony of only nine people. Which only three needed treatment. I loved this colony. As soon as we arrived they came out to greet us with smiles on their faces! They even had a welcome mat for us!
They were so happy to be there to spend time with us. We set up all the medical supplies and got started. My job today was to help cut out the ulcers. I sat down next to the nurse and prepared myself. As I watched her literally dig out ulcers with her scissors and blood falling from this poor mans foot I looked up at him to see him laughing and smiling and having a good time just because we were there with him. The Leprosy was bad enough in his feet that he could not feel it. I was so thankful to know that he wasn't in pain! The nurse hen asked me to wrap his wound. I picked up the wrap with my left hand and began. She took it away from me and said wrong hand and placed it in my right hand. I felt useless and clumsy because I'm left handed and could barley function. I think she thought I was incompetent. She finally aloud me to use both hands but the task was really awkward.
I met a married couple who had a really amazing story. Both used to be stunningly beautiful and have amazing careers. The man had an amazing speaking voice and was a famous radio announcer. Then they both contracted leprosy and were put in leprosy colony. The man has one leg that is amputated right below his knees and no toes on the other. He had no fingers on both hands and a painful ulcer on his shoulder. The wife had no fingers and only a few toes. To get around he uses some kind of scooter and she kind of uses her hands like a monkey would.
After we finished with medical we cleaned up and had a jam session! We danced and laughed! Almost everyone danced! Even the man who couldn't walk. He would clap his small hands together or Sean Perry would pick him up and spin him around. He has the sweetest laugh. Though one guy in particular was such a hoot be was ready to dance the moment we arrived.
We all had such a ball! Laughing so hard my sides hurt and dancing so much we were drenched in sweat. They showed me what true happiness is. Even with all the hardship and trials they are facing every day and all the pain and heartache they suffer watching their loved ones feel the impact of Leprosy they are happy and they danced, laughed and loved one another.
This is also a married couple. He was wearing these glasses when we arrived. He wouldn't take them off. So I grabbed mine to take a picture. She was laughing when we took this. She covered her face because we offered her a pair of sun glasses!
India is truly something special. I know that when you look around you can see so much dirt and filth but if you look past that you see people and lives that mean so much. Every person I have come in contact with her have made me a better person. I love these people and the things that they teach me
